Kambala

Kambala means Buffalo Race. It is conducted once in a year with traditionally. Coastal Karnataka is famous for this Buffalo race, that is nothing but Kambala. Kambala is traditionally a simple sport. And this Kambala gives much needed entertainment to the rural people. The contest generally takes place between two pairs of buffaloes in few areas, and each pair raced in wet rice fields, controlled by a whip-lashing farmer. But in some places like 'Vandaru' which is in Karnataka State, Udupi District, the buffalo race is held in a different manner. The single pair will run in the water filled rice filed and it is conducted on honor of specific god. Generally Vandaru Kambala is very much popular in coastal areas. The Kambala season generally start in November and lasts until March.
